Breast Reconstruction

Individual Planning After Mastectomy or Breast-Cancer Treatment.

Breast reconstruction aims to restore breast contour after mastectomy or other medically necessary breast-tissue removal. Timing and method depend on the cancer-care plan, previous treatment, available tissue, general health, and personal priorities. Available techniques are confirmed after specialist assessment.

A Personal and Medical Decision

Not every breast-cancer treatment requires mastectomy, and not everyone chooses reconstruction. When reconstruction is considered, the aim is to create a breast contour that fits the patient’s treatment history, anatomy, and priorities rather than to promise an exact recreation of the original breast.

Coordinated Reconstruction Planning

Planning considers whether reconstruction is immediate or delayed, the type of cancer treatment, previous surgery or radiotherapy, skin and soft-tissue availability, health, and future treatment. Coordination with the breast-care or oncology team is important before the reconstructive plan is confirmed.

General Reconstructive Options

Depending on specialist assessment, reconstruction may use an implant or a staged tissue expander followed by an implant. Further surgery may be considered to refine symmetry or reconstruct the nipple-areola complex. Not every local-tissue, free-flap, or microsurgical method is suitable or available, and complex techniques may require treatment at a specialist reconstructive center.

Recovery May Be Staged

Recovery varies widely by timing and method. Drains, temporary swelling and bruising, wound and scar care, activity restrictions, and repeated follow-up may be part of the process. Expander-based reconstruction and nipple-areola reconstruction can involve more than one planned stage.

Risks and Limitations

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, delayed healing, scarring, asymmetry, changes in sensation, tissue or skin problems, implant complications such as capsular contracture, and the need for further surgery. Previous or future cancer treatment can influence healing and the reconstructive result.

Related Breast Surgery Procedures

Related procedures may form part of staged reconstruction or symmetry planning.

Both timings may be considered. Cancer treatment, tissue condition, health, and patient preference determine whether immediate or delayed reconstruction is appropriate.
The appropriate and available options are confirmed after specialist assessment. A different or highly specialized technique may require treatment at a specialist reconstructive center.
It may be planned as a later stage after the breast contour has healed. Timing and suitability are discussed as part of the overall reconstruction plan.
