Breast Implant Exchange & Revision
A Case-Specific Plan for Existing Breast Implants.
Breast implant exchange and revision covers assessment and surgical management of an existing implant when a patient wants a different size or shape or when examination identifies an implant or capsule concern. Implant replacement and any capsule treatment are considered within one individualized plan.

Why Implant Revision May Be Considered
Breast implants are not exchanged on one universal timetable. Review may be appropriate because preferences or breast shape have changed, or because symptoms, imaging, or device information suggest an implant-related issue.
- A desired change in implant size, shape, or overall breast proportion.
- Capsular contracture, firmness, discomfort, or distortion.
- Suspected implant damage, rupture, displacement, or rotation.
- Assessment following relevant manufacturer or regulatory device information.
Evaluation Before Revision Surgery
Consultation reviews the original operation, implant records where available, current symptoms, breast shape, scars, and goals. Examination and imaging may be recommended. Planning covers the replacement implant’s size and shape and how the surrounding capsule should be managed when treatment is indicated.
A Tailored Operative Approach
A previous scar may be reused when suitable. The existing implant is removed and exchanged, and the surrounding capsule is assessed. The extent of capsule treatment depends on the findings. Complete en-bloc capsulectomy is not a routine or default step.
Recovery and Ongoing Implant Review
Recovery depends on how extensive the revision is. A supportive bra, wound care, temporary activity restrictions, and follow-up may be advised. New or worsening breast symptoms should be assessed rather than waiting for a routine replacement date.
Risks and Future Surgery
Risks include bleeding, infection, wound-healing problems, scarring, asymmetry, sensation changes, recurrent capsular contracture, implant displacement or damage, and the possibility of further surgery. Revision surgery cannot guarantee a permanent solution to every implant-related concern.
