Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Individualized Reshaping for Changes in Breast Position and Support.

A breast lift, medically known as mastopexy, reshapes and elevates a breast affected by skin laxity or loss of support. It can reposition the nipple and areola and may be combined with augmentation or reduction only when a change in volume is also appropriate.

What a Breast Lift Addresses

Breast shape may change after pregnancy and breastfeeding, substantial weight change, aging, or gradual weakening of the skin and supporting tissue. Mastopexy addresses sagging and nipple position; it does not automatically increase or reduce breast volume.

  • Loose skin and a lower breast position.
  • Nipples or areolas that sit lower than desired.
  • Shape or firmness changes after pregnancy or weight loss.
  • Asymmetry that can be improved through individualized reshaping.

Planning the Right Approach

The consultation considers breast volume, skin quality, nipple position, asymmetry, future pregnancy plans, and the desired shape. Surgery is generally planned after breast size and shape have stabilized. If more or less volume is wanted, the benefits and limitations of combining the lift with augmentation or reduction are discussed separately.

How Mastopexy Is Performed

Excess skin is removed and the breast tissue is reshaped and supported. The nipple-areola complex may be moved to a more suitable position. Incisions may be placed around the areola, extend vertically to the breast fold, or include a fold incision for more extensive lifting. The anatomy and degree of laxity determine the pattern.

Recovery and Result Maturation

A supportive bra, early rest, wound care, and temporary restrictions on strenuous activity are commonly advised. Swelling, bruising, tightness, and temporary sensation changes may occur. Breast shape and scars mature gradually, and follow-up is used to guide activity and scar care.

Risks, Scars, and Long-Term Change

Risks include bleeding, infection, wound-healing problems, prominent scars, asymmetry, altered sensation, and rare blood-supply problems affecting tissue. Pregnancy, weight fluctuation, tissue quality, and aging can change the breast again, so a lift cannot stop future natural change.

Related Breast Surgery Procedures

Your consultation may include comparison with related breast surgery options.

A lift reshapes existing tissue and removes excess skin; it does not inherently add volume. Augmentation can be considered separately when additional volume is part of the agreed plan.
Yes, when both excess volume and sagging need to be addressed. The amount of tissue removal and the scar pattern are tailored to the examination findings.
Results can be long-lasting, but aging, pregnancy, weight changes, and tissue quality continue to influence breast shape. No fixed duration can be guaranteed.
