Concerns Covered by Ear Correction

Planning is based on the exact external-ear anatomy rather than one standard correction. Treatment may address:

• Prominent ears that sit farther from the head than desired.
• Asymmetry in ear position, projection, fold definition, or contour.
• Cartilage shape that may benefit from reshaping, repositioning, or fixation.
• Torn or stretched earlobes and piercing channels, including changes after heavy jewelry or flesh tunnels.
• Earlobe size, attachment, shape, or contour concerns supported by the examination.

Assessment and Surgical Planning

Consultation compares both ears, cartilage strength and folds, projection from the head, earlobe tissue, scars, prior injury or piercing changes, health, medications, and healing history. The surgeon explains which feature can reasonably be changed, where scars are expected, and whether local or general anesthesia is appropriate for the planned operation.

Otoplasty for Prominent or Asymmetric Ears

An incision is commonly placed behind the ear. Depending on the anatomy, cartilage may be reshaped, folded, repositioned, or secured to create a more balanced position. The exact cartilage technique and any additional fixation are selected from the examination; no single method is presented as suitable for every ear.

Earlobe Repair

Earlobe correction may repair a split lobe, remove and reconstruct a stretched piercing channel, or reshape an enlarged, asymmetric, attached, or injured lobe. The altered edges or piercing tract are treated as required and the tissue is closed in a planned contour. Future piercing must wait until healing has been assessed; an exact timeline is individualized.

Recovery and Protection

A protective dressing and, for cartilage correction, a headband may be recommended. Wound care, avoiding pressure on the ears, temporary limits on sport or strenuous activity, and scheduled review help protect the new position while swelling and bruising settle. Earlobe aftercare is adjusted to the smaller repair and any future piercing plan.

Risks and Limitations

Possible risks include bleeding or hematoma, infection, pain, prolonged swelling, delayed wound healing, visible or raised scarring, asymmetry, contour irregularity, and recurrent prominence or earlobe distortion. Natural differences between the ears may remain, and cartilage and scars can change during healing.
