Breast Deformity Correction

Individualized Correction for Congenital and Developmental Breast Differences.

Breast deformity correction addresses congenital or developmental differences such as a tuberous or tubular breast, marked asymmetry, a restricted breast base, and disproportionate areola shape. Treatment is tailored to the anatomy and goals for each breast.

Differences This Page Covers

Developmental breast differences often become apparent during puberty and vary considerably from person to person. Mild natural asymmetry is common; surgery is considered when the difference is pronounced and the patient wants correction after breast development is stable.

  • Tuberous or tubular breast shape.
  • A narrow or restricted breast base and a high breast fold.
  • Marked difference in breast volume, shape, or position.
  • An enlarged, prominent, or asymmetric areola associated with the deformity.

Assessment and Shared Planning

Each breast is assessed separately for tissue distribution, skin, breast-fold position, areola shape, and degree of asymmetry. Planning also considers whether breast development is complete, the patient’s priorities, future pregnancy plans, medical history, and the trade-off between correction and scarring.

An Individualized Combination of Techniques

Correction may involve reshaping existing tissue, breast augmentation, reduction, lifting, areola correction, or balancing the opposite breast. Not every patient needs an implant, and no single combination is appropriate for every type of deformity. The operative plan is confirmed only after examination.

Recovery and Follow-Up

Recovery depends on the procedures combined. Support garments, temporary activity restrictions, wound and scar care, and follow-up visits may be required. Swelling and breast shape evolve over time, and some asymmetry can remain even after careful correction.

Risks and Realistic Expectations

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, delayed healing, visible scars, sensation changes, contour irregularity, tissue compromise, and persistent or recurrent asymmetry. When implants are used, implant-related risks such as capsular contracture also apply.

Related Breast Surgery Procedures

The correction plan may draw on related breast surgery procedures.

No. A tubular breast is a developmental shape difference that may include a restricted base and areola changes. Asymmetry describes a difference between breasts and can occur with or without a tubular shape.
No. Depending on tissue, volume, and goals, correction may use reshaping, lifting, reduction, augmentation, or a combination. Implant use is decided individually.
No. Surgery aims to improve proportion and balance, but natural anatomical differences and healing mean that some asymmetry may remain.
