What Are Skin Moles?
Skin moles (nevi) are common and usually harmless. They can appear anywhere on the body and may vary in size, shape, or color. In Dubai, where sun exposure is high year-round, regular skin checks are recommended to monitor any changes.
Why Regular Mole Checks Are Important
Most moles are stable, but some can change over time. Regular checkups help identify any changes early. Our dermatologists offer thorough mole screenings using clinically proven methods.

What Types of Moles Do We Check?
At German Clinic, our dermatologists examine all types of skin moles during your mole check or mapping session. Understanding the differences helps guide personalized monitoring and care. The most common types include:
- Common Moles – Small, round, and usually uniform in color.
- Atypical Moles – Irregular shape or color; may require closer monitoring.
- Congenital Moles – Present from birth, with size and appearance varying.
- Blue Nevi – Blue or blue-gray moles that are typically harmless but checked to rule out other conditions.
Common Moles
Common moles, also called acquired nevi, often develop during childhood or early adulthood. They are typically round, smooth, and uniform in color. Most people in Dubai have several of these due to sun exposure. While they are usually harmless, monitoring for any changes is recommended as part of routine skin care.
Atypical Moles
Atypical moles, or dysplastic nevi, tend to look different from regular moles. They may have uneven borders, mixed colors, or a larger size. These moles are common and usually not a cause for concern. However, they can sometimes resemble early skin changes, so dermatologists may recommend keeping an eye on them with regular checkups.
Congenital Moles
Congenital moles are present at birth and can range from small spots to larger patches. Most congenital moles are stable throughout life. Larger ones may need periodic checkups, especially if they are in areas exposed to the sun or prone to friction. Our dermatologists offer assessments to ensure lifelong monitoring when needed.
Blue Nevi
Blue nevi are small, deep-layer moles that appear blue or bluish-gray because of how the pigment sits in the skin. They are usually benign but can sometimes look similar to other lesions. For clarity and peace of mind, dermatologists often recommend professional evaluation to distinguish them from other skin conditions.

The ABCD Rule: How to Monitor Moles
The ABCD rule helps track mole changes: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, and Diameter over 6mm. If you notice changes, a dermatologist can help assess them with the right tools.
Skin Type & Family History
Skin type and family history affect how moles develop. People with lighter skin, common among Dubai’s expat community, may benefit from regular mole checks, especially if there’s a family history of skin conditions.
AI-Assisted Mole Checks with FotoFinder
Our clinic uses the FotoFinder AI system for mole analysis. This technology supports our dermatologists by comparing mole images to a global dataset, helping ensure thorough and precise monitoring over time.
